Development of sociology & anthropology in Nepal before 1950 A.D:
The development of sociology & anthropology before 1950
was not institualised being based on any theoretical modality. Some of the
documents which are related with Nepalese society and culture are mentioned
below:

1811)
2 An account of the kingdom of Nepal. (Hamilton -1818)
3 The kingdom of Nepal. (Guiseppe – 1869)
4 The Gurkha. (Z.C. Morris & W.T. Northey )
5 On the organization and customary law of Nepalese
tripe’s (Adam L – 1936)
So, the development of sociology & anthropology before
1950 was limited. Government was not motivated towards tthe research academic
and institutional development of sociology & anthropology. During the Rana
regime limited research was occurred some of the scholars develop the document
about the Nepalese culture and societies. This Rana regime was also called Dark
Age in terms of educational, sociological & anthropological development. In
totality it was unsatisfactory.
Development of sociology & anthropology of Nepal
after 1950:
The systematic, scientific, and well managed institutional
development of sociology and anthropology began only after 1950 A.D. In 1953
A.D village development training center (VDTC) was established for the rural
development. In 1960 significant
political changes was occurred. & VDTC changed into Panchayat training
center (PTC) which made the possible of rural sociology. In 1968 A.D PTC was
establish & curriculum was revised. In 1970 A.D Nepal’s Voice Chancellor
invited professor Ernest Gellener from London School of Economic for the study
of the scope of sociology & anthropology in Nepal. After the effective
logics & reason of report given by Gellener in 1973 A.D professor Macdonald
was appointed as a first professor of INAS ( Institute of Nepal & Asian
study ) In 1978 A.D TU ( Tribhuwan University ) recommended 5 student ( K.B
Bhattachan, Ram Bahadur Chetrri, Padam Lal Devekota, P.D Paudel, & Om
Gurung ) for the study of degree level education to the different university of
India on the condition of returning to Tribhuwan University ( TU ) After
completing their master degree in 1981 A.D Tribhuwan University introduced the
sociology & anthropology formally in Nepal under the leadership of senior
sociologist Chaittanya Mishra. In first batch of master degree there were 54
students.
Similarly, in 1985 A.D Bachelor level of program of the same
subject was establish in different college like as Tri-Chandra Campus –
Kathmandu, Mahendra Morang Campus – Biratnager, P.N Campus – Pokhara , &
Patan Multiple campus – Lalitpur. In 1999 A.D +2 level programs was establish
in higher secondary level. In the same time school level (class 9 & 10 )
sociology as a optional subject.
In this way different organization like as CINAS (Center of
Nepal and ), CEDA, SASON, DOSA, ETC making the help for the establishment of
institutional development of sociology & anthropology of Nepal. Similarly,
British Council, American Council, Nepal Academy, & different ethnic
council are the helping hand for the development of sociology &
anthropology in Nepal.
